Course Overview

This foundational programme provides a thorough grounding in Information and Communication Technology for individuals with little or no prior computer experience. Students learn to operate computers confidently, use productivity software, navigate the internet safely, understand networking basics, and apply digital skills in their professional and personal lives.

Aligned with the Ghana ICT4AD Policy and designed for the Ghanaian learner context, this course uses local examples, GH domain resources, and practical exercises relevant to everyday life and work in Ghana.

Learning Outcomes

  • Operate a computer confidently: start up/shutdown, file and folder management, keyboard shortcuts
  • Use Microsoft Office 365: Word (documents), Excel (spreadsheets), PowerPoint (presentations)
  • Use the internet safely: email, web browsing, social media, phishing awareness
  • Understand basic networking: internet, Wi-Fi, IP addresses, DNS, VPN
  • Protect data: passwords, two-factor authentication, antivirus, backups
  • Use cloud services: Google Drive, OneDrive, video conferencing (Zoom, Teams, Google Meet)
  • Understand emerging technology: AI tools, mobile money systems, e-government services in Ghana

Weekly Curriculum

Hardware vs software, types of computers, Windows 11 basics. Exercise: Power on/off, create folders, rename files, change desktop. Quiz: Hardware components.

Creating, saving, formatting text, paragraphs, tables, printing. Exercise: Type and format a 1-page CV. Assignment 1: Write a formal business letter.

Cells, rows, columns, basic formulas (SUM, AVERAGE, IF), charts. Exercise: Build a monthly budget spreadsheet. Quiz: Excel formulas.

Slides, themes, animations, slide show. Exercise: Create a 5-slide business pitch. Assignment 2: Present your "Dream Business" in 5 slides.

How the internet works, browsers, search engines, email etiquette, phishing. Exercise: Set up Gmail; compose and send a professional email. Quiz: Online safety. Mid-course assessment.

LAN/WAN/Internet, IP addresses, Wi-Fi, 4G/5G, MoMo and fintech. Exercise: Connect to Wi-Fi; troubleshoot a dropped connection. Assignment 3: Map the ICT infrastructure of your home or workplace.

Cloud services (Google Drive, OneDrive), passwords, 2FA, antivirus, backup 3-2-1 rule. Exercise: Set up Google Drive; back up a folder; enable 2FA on Gmail. Quiz: Cybersecurity.

AI tools (ChatGPT, Gemini), Ghana e-services (GhanaPostGPS, GhanaCard portal, DVLA online), digital entrepreneurship. Final Project: Complete ICT task portfolio. Practical exam.
